SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Skyforce announced today that they have claimed NBA veteran Johan Petro off of waivers. Vashil Fernandez has been waived in the process.
Petro, a 7-0, 250-pound center from France has appeared in 473 NBA regular season games (139 starts) spanning eight seasons from 2005 to 2013. Petro has played for the Seattle SuperSonics, Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, and the Atlanta Hawks.
Petro, a first-round pick by Seattle in the 2005 NBA Draft, has averaged 4.7 points and 3.9 rebounds over the course of his NBA career, highlighted by a season in which he averaged 6.0 points and 5.1 rebounds in just over 18 minutes per game while starting 28 of 72 games played for the SuperSonics in 2008.
Petro has also appeared in a total of 22 NBA playoff games (five starts), and most recently started four of six playoff games for the Atlanta Hawks in 2013, averaging 4.8 points and 3.7 rebounds in just under seven minutes per contest.
Since 2013, Petro has been playing internationally. He split the 2013-14 season between Zheijang Guangsha of the CBA League and CSP Limoges of the LNB Pro A League and the Leaders Cup. In total, Petro played in 29 games that season (10 starts) and averaged 7.1 points and 4.6 rebounds.
During the 2014-15 season, Petro played for Mets De Guaynabo of the Puerto Rican BSN League where he appeared in 45 games (44 starts) and averaged 9.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. He continued play in the BSN League during the 2015-16 season, averaging 7.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 45 games (40 starts) while playing for both Cangrejeros de Santurce and Leones de Ponce.
