Sioux Falls, SD- The Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and Police Department are ready to compete in a friendly competition that is in its 21st year. This blood donation competition ensures the community has the blood supply needed to treat patients during the holidays.

“Each year this special blood drive competition provides many new donors, as well as those that have donated blood for many years to support our community heroes and blood supply during the holidays,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “Through the tremendous support from the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, Police Department and the many sponsors involved in the success of the event, we are able to provide blood to our local patients during the most challenging time of the year to encourage donors to give the gift of life.”

The competition between the two departments kicks off Tuesday, December 27 and will run through Friday, January 6. The public is encouraged to walk into either Sanford Medical Center (333-6444) or Avera McKennan Hospital (322-7111) donor rooms and designate their blood donation to the department of their choice. Donors can choose a specially designed “police” or “fire” t-shirt for donating blood at the donor rooms (while supplies last) and a $5.00 certificate at Texas Roadhouse (compliments of Texas Roadhouse).

The public can donate at various blood drives hosted by both departments, with the kick-off event at the Original Pancake House and Camille’s Sidewalk Café on Monday, December 27:

• Donate in honor of the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue at The Original Pancake House (41st St. & Kiwanis Ave.) from 7:00am to 1:00pm and receive a stack of Original Pancake House’s special buttermilk pancakes and a t-shirt designed by the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue.

• Donate in honor of the Sioux Falls Police Department at Camille’s Sidewalk Café (41st St. & Grange Ave.) from 9:00am to 2:00pm and receive a “free” lunch and a t-shirt designed by the Sioux Falls Police Department.

The department with the most donations will contribute $700.00 to the charity of their choice; second place will donate $300.00 (compliments of Citibank and Farmer’s Insurance Rod Goeman Agency). Sioux Falls Fire Rescue has designated Children’s Home Society, and Sioux Falls Police Department has designated Special Olympics of South Dakota. Last year it was the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue taking the victory over Sioux Falls Police Department with 495 donations vs. 487 donations.

Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood. Please bring an ID with you at the time of donation.
